SPFGA Naturalist Series – Alberta’s Fisheries: Not Simple to Manage

Alberta’s Fisheries are Not Simple to Manage: A fun introduction to a complex and difficult topic.

Fisheries are easy to manage, right? Just let everybody eat one or two fish, then stock more. Why not?

If it were only that simple…!

Dr. Michael Sullivan will explain the fascinating mix of human population, fish biology, and social science (including the legacy of World War 2 to Alberta’s current experience with fish stocking) that make Alberta fisheries a wonderful area for young biologists to spend a career. He’ll also delve into an explaination of some crucial “Survival Tips for Biologists” that make this lifestyle so rewarding.

Winter Nature Walk

Following Dr. Sullivan’s presentation at the clubhouse, we will take a winter nature walk of the property.

Minimum Attendance Age

If a youth is attending without adult accompaniment, they must be 15 years of age or older. If the youth is accompanied by an adult however, there really isn’t a minimum age. As long as they are old enough to make it through this day of activities and do so safely, they are absolutely welcome to attend.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Michael Sullivan continues to nurture a life-long love affair with Canada’s wild places, especially in Alberta’s mountains and the North. He is paid by the Alberta provincial government as their Fisheries Scientist (Fish and Wildlife Division) but doesn’t let that stop him from enjoying the lessons offered by the study of wild lands and the furry and finny residents that live there. His preferred habitat is a snow cave overlooking some lonely valley, but as an adjunct professor, he is usually found near the University of Alberta campus, where he is lucky enough to earn a living (and guide graduate students) to finding ways to make peace between fishermen, developers, and fishes.
